Hay and the surrounding area is the ideal place to tick off some of those ‘must do’ activities. Why not try hiring a canoe to explore the scenic River Wye, or perhaps hiking or mountain biking across the Brecon Beacons, or maybe even take the swing ropes challenge? If that all sounds to energetic perhaps enjoy a BBQ by the river and a 'wild' swim.
Whatever it is you choose to do Hay and its wonderful surroundings have something for everyone, from families to adrenaline junkies, it’s a fabulous playground in the most perfect place.

Hay Festival Winter Weekend, 27 - 29 November 2017 Fun for all the family over three days in the town of books, Hay-on-Wye. This year’s Hay Festival Winter Weekend will take its theme from the recently launched #HAYTREES project in partnership with the Woodland Trust and National Trust in Wales. On the banks of the River Wye, beneath the Black Mountains and on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park, Hay is a year-round destination for culture lovers, with its dozens of bookshops, vintage clothes and craft markets, food fair, beautiful B&Bs, independent cinema, and cosy cafés, pubs and restaurants. 2017 speakers and performers will be announced on 16 October 2017.
Gliding Lesson at Black Mountains Gliding Club. Take a flight in a dual controlled glider, with a qualified instructor. The glider will be towed up behind the tow-plane to a nearby hill or to 2000ft (dependent on conditions). You will fly within the Brecon Beacons National Park, and perhaps share a thermal with a buzzard or two. You may even see a red kite - several live nearby. The airfield is located in an idyllic setting, at the base of the Black Mountains, with panoramic views to the west. During the 20-30 minute flight you will be invited to take the controls. Your instructor will help you understand how the controls work and you will be able to fly the glider yourself. This is an excellent introduction to gliding.
